BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Global Gardens supports beginning farmers from diverse backgrounds by providing access to land, training, and the market.
Bushka Adin, a refugee farmer, came to America from Kenya in 2004. He learned farming from his father.
“We were farmers, my parents were farmers," Adin said. "But me, I came from a camp, life was not okay.”
Now, he says he gets to do similar things that he used to do in a new place.
"They help us. They help the refugees. It’s still kind of adopting our culture," Adin said. "They help us not forget our culture and where we came from.”
And after a difficult year with the pandemic, the farmers are excited for new beginnings.
"Producing in 2020 was easy, but selling was difficult, because people were not buying," Adin said. "Restaurants were closed, people were not showing up because this pandemic."
He and other farmers say 2021 will be better.
Abdikadir Chimwaga, is also a refugee farmer. He's from Somalia and Kenya.
“Last year I didn’t do really well, that’s why I say I’m on fire this year," Chimwaga said. "You’re going to see a lot of stuff, I’m gonna be ready.”
He says the Boise Global Market has been helpful in his transition and making America feel like home.
"I'm happy for this, I'm happy for my customers," Abdikadir Chimwaga. "I'm ready to serve my hundreds of customers and community, and I'm happy for this year."
